Company Portrait Atelier Macala GmbH
Stephan Macala acquired his sculpturing skills through working with his father, Helmut Macala, a restorer, and as assistant to Professor Magnus. He also attended advanced courses in art and design, raw materials technology, artificial materials processing and classical sculpture.
Atelier Macala was founded in 1990 and restructured as a limited company (GmbH) in 2005. Beside creating artworks, the company also constructs three-dimensional elements for business and trade purposes. A wide variety of businesses have commissioned work from Atelier Macala – for example, banks, hotels, trade fairs and promotion and advertising companies.
In recent years the Atelier has undertaken an increasing number of commissions from museums. Museums, in particular, demand work of the very highest quality and require that the reproductions of exhibits, figurines or scenographic representations be as nearly as possible identical with the original. Manuela Macala, who joined the company in 2004, is an historian and museum educator. The company is therefore now able to offer museums a combination of many years experience in museum education coupled with extensive skills in sculpture and three-dimensional representation.
The commissions undertaken by our small business demand both the special skills, know-how, creativity and flexibility relevant to our work, combined with successful cooperation with other professionals. Over the years we have developed a network of professionals working in a variety of areas – welders, painters, carpenters and sculptors. This network enables us to carry out both small and large-scale commissions. The fact that some commissions originate in Austria, others further a field, (Germany, Italy, the Czech Republic, Japan, Canada).
